Fire Life Safety is an integral part of any building. Air Systems is qualified to certify the integrity of fire and smoke dampers. Regular inspections of these devices are important to ensure they will function properly in case of emergency.
Fire Dampers are dampers designed to automatically seal shut to restrict the spread of fire. A fusible link that holds the damper open melts when the temperature typically reaches about 165°F, causing the damper to close. These dampers have a rating which is based on how many hours it prevent fire from passing through.
NFPA Code 80
Smoke Dampers on the other hand are not meant to control the passage of smoke. These dampers are actuated to close when smoke is detected from a sensor to confine the smoke from other areas.
NFPA Code 105
There are also combination Fire/Smoke Dampers, which will shut at the detection of either fire or smoke.
NFPA Code 80
